[CVE-2026-116606] Critical Barracuda Vulnerabilities Could Be Chained to Gain Root Access
Severity
Critical
Barracuda has disclosed two security vulnerabilities affecting its Email Security Gateway and other network security appliances. When exploited together, the flaws could allow attackers to bypass authorization controls and execute operating system commands with root privileges on affected devices.
The vulnerabilities are tracked as CVE-2026-116606 and CVE-2026-111560, with CVSS scores of 9.3 and 8.6, respectively.
According to Barracuda, successful exploitation requires access to the administrative interface of an affected product. By chaining both vulnerabilities, an attacker could bypass authorization restrictions and obtain root-level access to the appliance.
| CVE ID | Summary | CVSS Score |
| CVE-2026-116606 | An authentication bypass in Barracuda Email Security Gateway versions earlier than 9.4.0.030 allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to invoke a configuration-import function and restore a crafted, compatible backup archive, resulting in unauthorized modification of the appliance’s global configuration. | 9.3 (Critical) |
| CVE-2026-111560 | Improper neutralization of shell metacharacters in the timezone configuration field in certain Barracuda appliance products using common Barracuda code allows an authenticated administrator to inject OS commands that execute with root privileges when the crafted timezone value is subsequently processed. | 8.6 (High) |
Barracuda has released security patches for the affected products. No active exploitation of these two vulnerabilities was reported at the time of disclosure.
Affected Products
The vulnerabilities affect the following Barracuda products:
| Product | CVE-2026-116606 | CVE-2026-111560 |
| Email Security Gateway (ESG) | Yes | Yes |
| Load Balancer Application Delivery Controller (ADC) | No | Yes |
| Message Archiver (BMA) | No | Yes |
| WAF Control Center (WCC) | No | Yes |
| Web Application Firewall (WAF) | No | Yes |
| Web Security Gateway (WSG) | No | Yes |
Recommendation
Barracuda has released security patches for both vulnerabilities. Organizations using affected products should ensure that their appliances are running the latest firmware versions and have received the applicable security updates.
The following patches have been provided:
- Email Security Gateway: BNSF-40425 (firmware 9.4.017 and later) or BNSF-40430 (firmware versions earlier than 9.4.017).
- Load Balancer ADC and Web Application Firewall: BNADC-16586.
- Message Archiver: BNMA-32468.
- WAF Control Center: BNWF-60060.
- Web Security Gateway: BNYF-24789.
Administrative interfaces should also be restricted to trusted internal networks using appropriate network access controls to reduce exposure to unauthorized access.
